John Deere Power Systems - Interim Tier 4/Stage III B Engines

About John Deere Power Systems
With roots several decades deep in farm equipment manufacturing, John Deere is often first thought of as a major player in the agricultural industry. Some overlook that John Deere is also a global leader in construction, offering a full line of equipment and parts, as well as off-highway diesel engines ranging from 36 to 448 kW (49 to 600 hp).

At John Deere, we have more than 85 years of off-highway engine experience and expertise. Since 1949, we have designed and manufactured more than 5 million diesel engines and have established a network of more than 4,000 John Deere dealers that offer engine service and support. John Deere engines are produced in different factories worldwide: Saran (France), Waterloo (USA), Torreon (Mexico), Pune (India), and Rosario (Argentina). John Deere is a leader in developing world-class diesel engines and integrating them into off-highway applications. John Deere engines are distributed to more than 700 OEMs worldwide for use in construction, marine, agricultural and forestry machines, air compressors, generator sets, irrigation pumps, and natural gas on-highway applications. John Deere also manufactures drivetrain components.

Built on proven PowerTech Plus technology
John Deere has always been ahead of the game when it comes to meeting emissions regulations. Interim Tier 4/Stage III B is no exception. We pioneered the use of many advanced technologies with our Tier 3/Stage III A engines and proved their performance in off-highway applications. This gives us a head start for fuel economy as well as delivering higher power bulge, more torque rise, and faster transient response time.
John Deere Engine

First in its field
John Deere was the first engine manufacturer to take advantage of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) technologies in off-highway applications, introducing them with Tier 3/Stage III A emissions regulations. Our engines have a proven record of emissions reduction, best-in-class fuel economy, and rugged reliability. By choosing EGR first, we proved cooled exhaust gas recirculation could meet emissions regulations and deliver high performance without the continuing cost and inconvenience of SCR. When it comes to off-highway performance, other engine manufacturers can only follow in our tracks.

Best-in-class fuel economy
John Deere achieved record fuel economy gains and claimed best-in- class fuel economy with our Tier 3/Stage III A PowerTech Plus engines. The PowerTech Plus 9.0L engine set fuel economy records during independent testing at the Nebraska Tractor Test Lab, consuming nearly 9 percent less fuel than its predecessor. Other engine manufacturers are just now introducing the use of cooled EGR and VGT in their off-highway Interim Tier 4 product offerings. Because John Deere Interim Tier 4/Stage III B engines build on our already proven technologies, we expect to maintain fuel-economy leadership in the off-highway industry.

Smart exhaust filters
Interim Tier 4/Stage III B PowerTech engines 130 kW (174 hp) and above will utilize a catalyzed exhaust filter that contains a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Under normal operating conditions, the DOC reacts with exhaust gases to reduce carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and some particulate matter (PM). The downstream DPF forces exhaust gases to flow through porous channel walls, trapping and holding the remaining PM. Trapped particles are eventually oxidized within the DPF through a self-activating cleaning process called passive regeneration, utilizing exhaust heat created under normal operating conditions.

Off-highway durability
The jobs that John Deere PowerTech engines tackle every day are as varied as the equipment they power. That’s why John Deere Interim Tier 4/Stage III B engines integrate many technologies designed to meet the unique needs of off-highway equipment. PowerTech 6.8L, 9.0L, and 13.5L engines use our proven PowerTech Plus technology which includes 4-valve cylinder heads, cooled EGR, VGT, air-to-air aftercooling, high-pressure fuel systems, and wet-type cylinder liners.
Application

Saran’s Factory
Saran factory is based near Orleans (France), manufactures diesel engines from 36 to 205 kW and has been ISO9002 certified by the AFAQ (Association Française pour l'Assurance de la Qualité) in November 1990. Saran is nowadays ISO9001 (2000 version) as well as ISO14001 (environment respect) certified. Administrative centre as well as Marketing Branch (responsible for engines Sales in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Australia) are also hosted in Saran factory. Moreover, European Engine Engineering based in Saran is dedicated to customers applications management, Emissions (Stage IIIA) and Noise European regulations follow up as well as specific parts conception and development. Latest technologies are also tested in newly installed cell tests.
