This Privacy Statement outlines the types of personal information John Deere may collect and how we may use that information. This statement will also tell you how we secure your personal information and how you can assist in managing it. This statement does not apply to the financial services provided by John Deere Credit, which has a different privacy policy and principles. What We Collect

John Deere's primary goal in collecting personal information is to engage in a relationship with you that allows us to serve you better. Personal information allows us to improve our communication flow with you. In return, we expect to be able to provide you with better products and services.

WE MAY COLLECT: 

a) Personal Information
When you visit John Deere Web sites, we will not collect any personal information about you unless you provide it to us voluntarily. If you opt not to provide us with personal information, you can still access our Web sites. However, you may be unable to participate in certain promotions or receive product information offered to those that register.

Through our various Web sites, you can:

  • register to obtain product or service information,
  • register to utilize online information and planning services,
  • participate in sales or promotional programs,
  • vote in polls, surveys or otherwise express opinions,
  • subscribe to one of our services such as newsletters,
  • participate in one of our online forums or communities,
  • enter contests or sweepstakes, and
  • engage in online shopping.

Many of these programs require you to submit some personal information in order to participate. Information such as name, address, credit card number, billing address, telephone number, date of birth, business information or e-mail address may be gathered. To capitalize on the interactivity of the Internet, we may also ask you for information about your interests, hobbies and other personal information, but you may always choose whether to respond.

b) Aggregate and Statistical Data
John Deere may collect certain aggregate data called Web log information (such as your Web browser, operating system, pages visited, etc.) and use cookies when you visit our Web pages. For instance, when you visit one of our Web sites, our Web server will automatically recognize some non-personal information, including, but not limited to, the date and time you visited our site, the pages you visited, the referrer (the Web site you came from), the type of browser you are using (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer), the type of operating system you are using (e.g., Windows '95 or Mac OS), and the domain name and address of your Internet service provider (e.g., AOL). Neither our cookies, Web beacons nor Web log information collects any personal information. They do not contain personal information such as your name or e-mail address.

How We Collect It

Personal information is collected through a variety of means. The following provides examples of how this information is collected.

Registration/Subscriptions/Product Information Requests: To fully use our Web sites, visitors may need to register using our online registration forms, where they will be required to provide us personal information. Visitors may also be asked to select a user ID and password. Further, to register for certain services or become a member of certain communities, we may ask visitors to submit their name, e-mail address, home address, and zip/postal code. In addition, we ask for country of residence and age so that we can comply with all applicable privacy regulations. You may also choose to receive e-mail newsletters and alerts. You can always decide to stop receiving these e-mail newsletters at any time.

Contests/Sweepstakes: John Deere may run contests, sweepstakes and other promotions on its sites or through interactive banner ads. These events may ask you to provide personal information which is needed to administer the contest, sweepstakes or promotions and to notify winners.

Questionnaires, Surveys and Profile Data: John Deere may occasionally ask visitors to complete surveys and opinion polls about their interests, needs, and attitudes. Surveys help us provide better services and products that meet customer needs. Participation is completely voluntary and these surveys are optional.

Consumer Services and Contact Information: If you provide our customer service representatives or Web masters with feedback on your experiences with our products/services or otherwise submit questions, you will be asked to supply personal information for our record keeping and follow-up.

Employment Information: Personal information you may submit in connection with employment inquiries will be used only for recruitment and future internal consideration. It will be accessible solely by persons responsible for recruitment for John Deere entities. This information will be kept no longer than three years.

How We Use It

We may use personal information for a variety of purposes. We may also use summary information to support our business planning. Following are some examples of how we may use each category of information.

a) Personal Information:

1) Order Process and Product Delivery: We may use your personal information to provide you with the product or service you requested.

2) Support and Service: We may use your personal information to identify your product ownership or use, or entitlement to a service and to send you necessary information such as warranty information, product improvement programs, safety bulletins or recall notices.

4) Legal Compliance: We use your personal information to comply with applicable law.

5) Marketing / Communications / Information Services: We may use your personal information for marketing and promotional purposes to offer you goods and services and to send you marketing and promotional materials. Examples of these materials include company magazines such as The Furrow and Homestead magazines, catalogs, product videos, brochures, invitations to special events, special offers and parts and service announcements. Occasionally, we may use your personal information to send marketing and promotional information to you on behalf of suppliers. We may disclose your personal information to authorized dealers, merchants and suppliers so they can send you marketing and promotional materials directly. However, we will not disclose your "sensitive" personal information, such as financial information to suppliers without obtaining your consent.  

While continuing to serve your needs, now and in the future, we may use and disclose your personal information for the above purposes. We may retain this information for as long as needed to fulfill these purposes and as required by law.

b) Aggregate and Statistical Data: John Deere uses Web log information (such as your Web browser, operating system, pages visited, etc.) to help us design our Web site, to identify popular features, and to manage our resources. However, Web logs may be used if necessary to help identify any person attempting to break into or damage our Web site. We may share Web log information with law enforcement agencies if we believe there is evidence of a violation of computer security or related laws.

How We Share It

Sharing:  Personal information received from you may be used to fulfill your requests and to support your customer relationship with John Deere, its subsidiaries and business partners. Personal information is provided to our affiliates to aid in the delivery of our products and services. In the ordinary course of business, we may share information with auditors, lawyers or contractors, but we require that recipients use the information only for the purpose of the disclosure and that they destroy or return the information when no longer needed.

John Deere also reserves the right to share the information to respond to duly authorized information requests of governmental authorities or where required by law. We may also disclose information if appropriate to protect our Web site or our legal rights.

We will not share, trade or sell personal information to any other outside company for its use in marketing or solicitation.

Data Transfer: Your personal information will generally be stored in our John Deere databases, which may be located in various geographies. John Deere data protection standards are the same, regardless of where your personal information is stored.

How We Obtain Your Consent

John Deere does not require visitors to our Web sites to provide personal information in order to obtain access to any of our sites. John Deere collects personal information from our visitors or customers only on a voluntary basis. We obtain your consent by obtaining your agreement, in many cases your signature, on various transactions such as orders, warranty registration or Web registration.

If you register on our Web sites, we also provide you a means of managing the electronic communications sent to you. You may request a variety of information to be e-mailed to you. At any time, you may change or stop these e-mail communications. In addition, marketing e-mails sent to you provide you a means of requesting them to stop.

How We Secure It

John Deere is committed to keeping the data you provide us secure and will take reasonable precautions to protect your personal information from loss, misuse or alteration. We take technical, administrative and physical steps to protect against anticipated hazards including unauthorized access to and disclosure of personal information. We use secure connections on our Web sites to protect credit card information during its transmission. Our vendors, contractors and partners who have access to your personal information are required to keep this information confidential. They are only authorized to use this information to carry out the services they are performing for John Deere. Access to personal information is restricted to those employees requiring access to do their jobs. These employees are required to sign a confidentiality agreement outlining their responsibilities. Any employee who violates our privacy and/or security policies is subject to disciplinary action, including possible termination and civil and/or criminal prosecution.

How You Can Manage It

You are in control of the personal information you provide to John Deere. Information collected by the company on our Web sites is provided by you voluntarily.

Where required by applicable law:

  • You have a right to access your information to ensure it is accurate.
  • You may request an update where your personal information is not correct.
  • You may also request to have your personal information removed or made anonymous.
  • The company must ensure that all legal retention dates have been met prior to removing personal information.

If your contact information is being used to send you marketing information, you can request company operations to stop these communications. If you are registered online, you have the capability to start or stop electronic communications. Many of the communications contain instructions detailing how to stop them such as an e-mail address to contact, a Web site to use, a phone number to call or an address to write. If you decide to stop company marketing e-mails, you may still receive legal notices or billing e-mails as part of your other business transactions with the company.

Where required by applicable law, you can:

1. Ask for a copy of your personal information.
2. Ask for your personal information to be corrected or updated.
3. Ask us to remove your personal information from our records.
4. Ask us to remove you from marketing communications.

Children's Privacy

Data Collection for Persons Under 13: Interactive activities for children are offered on the Web site, but no children's information is targeted for collection. John Deere will not knowingly request personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If we become aware that any individual under the age of 13 provided us their personal information through our Web sites, we will immediately remove his or her personal information from our files.

John Deere provides information of interest about the company to students of various ages. This information may be accessed from the Web site without providing any personal information. In some instances, a student may use the "Contact Us" feature of the Web site to ask a question or request more information. This contact information is only used to respond to the request and is immediately deleted.

How We Use Cookies

The Use of Cookies - The John Deere Policy: We use cookies on the Web site to enhance your online experience.  No personally identifiable information is stored in the cookies.   A cookie is a text-only string of information that a Web site transfers to the cookie file of the browser on your computer’s hard drive.  Cookies are used, for example, to tell us whether you've visited us before or if you're a new visitor, to help us identify features of interest to you, to enhance your online experience by saving information you may need to reuse throughout our site during a particular session or to remember your preferences between visits.  Session cookies and the information they contain are temporary and are erased when you close your browser.  We collaborate with a 3rd party service to use persistent cookies to assign your visit an identifier so that we can remember your visit, your preferences and to analyze and improve our Web site usage.  Persistent cookies remain on your hard drive until you erase them or they expire.  No personal information is collected in the persistent cookie.      

To evaluate the effectiveness of company advertising placed elsewhere on the Internet, we may use cookies or other related tracking technology such as web beacons to track responses to our advertisements or "banner ads." When you click on the ad at another Web site, you may be taken to JohnDeere.com or a related Web site to obtain more information on the advertised product or service. The cookie or tracking technology used with the ad does not identify you personally or store any personally identifiable information but provides us with information such as the Web site where the ad was placed, which specific ad was in use at the time, and the most common navigation paths on our site from the ad. Although these cookies may remain on your computer after you log off, you may delete them from your computer at any time.

Most Internet browsers are set to accept cookies. Users can reset browsers to refuse cookies and still use our Web site, although access may not be as convenient.  The "help" portion on most browsers will tell you how to stop accepting cookies, how to be notified when you receive a new cookie and how to disable existing cookies.

It is important for the company to maintain this level of trust and meet or exceed the expectations of those who supply personal information. Access & Amendment: Procedures will be maintained, consistent with applicable law for individuals to gain access to their collected personal information and when appropriate, correct any information that is inaccurate or incomplete, change their individual consent level, or have their personal information deleted.
Accountability: The company will comply with applicable laws and regulations concerning the collection, use and storage of personal information and designate accountability for compliance.
Children's Information: No personal information pertaining to children under 13 years of age will be collected, stored or processed. If this happens without the company's knowledge, it will be reported to PrivacyManager@JohnDeere.com and the data will be immediately deleted.
Collection: The collection of personal information will be limited to that which is necessary for the purposes identified.
Complaints: Procedures for registering complaints will be published. All complaints or concerns and appropriate resolution relating to the practices of handling personal information will be logged. Each complaint and associated resolution will be communicated to PrivacyManager@JohnDeere.com.
Confidentiality: The confidentiality of an individual's personal information will be respected. No employee will use or disclose personal information unless it is required to support company operations and is in compliance with the company's privacy policies. Failure to comply can result in personal liability, company discipline and potential dismissal. Employees with regular access or exposure to personal information must sign a confidentiality agreement to indicate awareness of their responsibility.
Consent: Consent, implicit or explicit will be obtained consistent with applicable laws, to collect, use and distribute an individual's personal information. John Deere must communicate the consequences of any decision by individuals who elect to not provide requested personal information.
Direct Marketing: Operations engaging in any form of direct communication with individuals for the purpose of marketing the company's products or services will ensure procedures are in place to stop their direct marketing at the individual's request. An easy procedure must be provided for the individual to make such a request. All electronic communications will comply with legislation governing unsolicited communications (SPAM).
Disclosure Contracts:All operations must contractually require others who acquire or provide personal information from or to John Deere to protect our confidential information about you and to abide by applicable law.
Global Implementation: To ensure unrestricted transfer of personal information between company operations, John Deere's privacy policy will be implemented consistently around the world.
Identifier: Where applicable by law, an identifier of an individual assigned by a government agency, its agent or contracted service provider will not be adopted by any company organization.
Notice: Notice will be provided consistent with applicable law when personal information is collected, when any collected information is to be provided to third parties or when information previously collected is to be used for a new purpose. All such notices will explain the need for the information and describe how the information will be used. When required by applicable law, personal information will not be used to directly market any products or services to identifiable persons unless that possibility has been disclosed in advance and the opportunity not to participate has been given.
Notice of Practices: Information pertaining to our policies and practices relating to the management of personal information will be made available on our Web sites or upon request.
Processing: Personal information will be processed consistent with notice. It will not be used or disclosed for purposes other than those for which it was collected.
Retention: All personal information should be deleted or made anonymous as soon as reasonably possible after fulfilling the purpose for collecting the information. Sufficient time should be provided for an individual to report issues associated with the processing of the personal information or to meet legal requirements for retaining the information.
Sale: No personal information collected by company personnel or processes will be sold or traded for marketing purposes.
Security: The security of personal information and the integrity of such information, will be maintained and protected with a commercially reasonable degree of care while in the custody of the company, its authorized agents and representatives. Access by company personnel or authorized agents or representatives will be limited to those individuals with a sufficient business need.
Sensitive Data: The processing of sensitive personal data such as data revealing the racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade-union membership, health and sex life are prohibited by various laws. Procedures will be maintained to assure that this and other sensitive information such as children's information or medical conditions is only collected with explicit consent and is protected against improper use, consistent with applicable law.
Special Circumstances: Company operations will under certain circumstances where permitted or required by law or court order, collect, use, and/or disclose personal information pursuant to procedures that do not require giving notice or conducting related activities (for example, in connection with law enforcement investigations).

Updating the Privacy Statement

To keep up with the rapidly evolving Internet environment, John Deere will from time to time review and revise these practices and communicate any updates. Minor changes may be made at anytime without notice. We will update the version number and date of the notice when we do. If we make a major change in the way that we use, disclose or protect Internet registration information, we will highlight the change in this notice. If possible, we will provide advance notice of any major change through a notice on the Web site.

Effective Date: This policy statement was created and put into effect on 1 January 2004.

Revision: 3 April 2008.  The "Cookies" section was updated to communicate our intent to use persistent cookies to better understand our site usage and the needs of our repeat visitors.
