Providing Disaster Relief

John Deere has a long history of supporting people in times of disaster.

What We Do
We support relief and recovery efforts that follow regional, national, and international disasters in areas where we have large operating units and major employee presence. Through these efforts John Deere helps people prepare to rebuild lives and communities.

American Red Cross
The John Deere Foundation and Deere & Company are longtime partners with the American Red Cross. In 2009, the foundation made annual grants of $250,000 to both the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund and the International Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

We are confident the Red Cross is well positioned to best assist families and communities through its broad array of programs that help people begin to recover from disasters.

Altogether, the John Deere Foundation made grants of $1.65 million for disaster relief efforts in 2008, including:
  • $1 million to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund for initial relief efforts following eastern Iowa/western Illinois flooding
  • $160,000 to support Embrace Iowa, an initiative to coordinate recovery efforts following the flooding in eastern Iowa
  • $250,000 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund for China Relief and Development following the devastating earthquake in Sichuan Province
  • $25,000 to the American Red Cross to support initial relief efforts in the Mexican state of Tabasco following major flooding throughout the area

In 2008, our employees also donated more than $130,000 to support global disaster relief efforts, which was matched by the John Deere Foundation.

Employees worldwide donated $87,205 for relief efforts following the May 12, 2008, earthquake in Sichuan Province, China. Employees gave another $50,000, divided between the American Red Cross and the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, to support relief and recovery efforts following tornadoes in Parkersburg, Iowa, and surrounding areas.

Throughout the company, individual units also support local disaster appeals, donate warehouse space and provide volunteers that support the Red Cross mission.

In some limited cases, equipment has been made temporarily available to communities to help recovery efforts.
