Braving the Bearing Sea
The Incentive
The John Deere-powered Incentive takes to crab fishing under the spotlight of Discovery Channel camera crews

Imagine pulling in pots of Opilio crab in January on the ice-filled, unruly waters of the Bering Sea. For Alaskan fishermen, the job is the most difficult and dangerous on the water. Crews endure the worst that Mother Nature can dish out: violent waters, bitter temperatures, and lashing, blistering winds.

It's a job that few experience firsthand. Yet television viewers in North America tune into a bit of its drama and danger from the comforts of their homes on Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch. Last winter, film crews boarded the John Deere-powered fishing vessel Incentive for an entire month to document the 32-meter (106 ft.) Power Scow and her six-member crew during the Opilio crab season.

Viewers watched the Incentive at the season's start as the crew endured 6-meter (20 ft.) seas, 113-kilometer per hour (70 mph) winds, and subzero temperatures north of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Battling the elements, the crew managed to haul in 13.5-metric tons (300,000 lbs.) of crab, putting the Incentive in an early lead over other crab vessels on the show.

"Full shoe mamma!" exclaims Incentive captain Harry Lewis, as a pot of 500 crabs is drawn from the icy water during Incentive's first episode.
